Sign-in, Introductions - ­ Guests were introduced.  Robert Wilson was welcomed as a new member to the SWMC.   Mr. Wilson will replace Benjamin Jones as a City of Manhattan representative. The sign-in sheet was distributed.

 

Approve the minutes of the previous meeting  The minutes of the previous meeting were approved as presented.

 

KDHE Grant to clean-up dumpsite SW of Randolph  - Riley County will receive a $10,000 grant to clean-up the Primm dumpsite SW of Randolph.  Dan Harden explained the clean-up process.   Dan also gave a progress report on the Hassebroek Landfill clean-up. 

 

 

N.R Hamm Increase –  Dan Harden told the committee that as of July 1, 2001 N.R. Hamm will increase its fee from $23.62 to $24.59.  This is the first increase since July 1, 2000. 

 

Fort Riley MSW Bid – Dan Harden explained the bid process.   Riley County was the only bidder.  The new contract will be for 3 years starting June 1, 2001 and ending May 31, 2004.

 

Discuss Expo 2001 – Julie Winter presented a brief overview of the 2001 Recycling & HHW booth activities.  This year the focus was on recycling household hazardous waste.  The booth took 1st place for the “Most Informative Booth”.   Winter thanked all the volunteers and staff for all their hard work.

Discuss Earth Day Activities – Julie Winter told the committee that this year Riley County participated in the Wal-Mart Earth Day activities.  Dennis Peterson set-up the HHW display used at the Expo, brochures and handouts were distributed to those interested.  John Woods gave a brief overview of the activities held in the City Park.  The KSU Students for Environment (SEA) held an Earth Day Concert in the City Park Pavilion.  Attendance was low this year most likely due to short notice, not enough advertising and too many activities going on at the same time.  John hopes this event will continue and that next year there will be more participation. 

 

Discussion on Curbside Recycling Task Force  - To date there has been no appointments to this task force.   Steve Galitzer will talk to one of the City Commissioners and report back.

 

Distribution of revised Solid Waste Management Plan – Julie distributed the revised plan to all members present.    

 

Next meeting  - The next meeting will be September 13, 2001 at 7:00 in the Second Floor Conference Room of the Riley County Office Building.
