SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE

The meeting was called to order by Steve Galitzer, Chair.

 

AGENDA

 

 

1.         Roll call (Attendance sign-up sheet)

 

            The attendance sign-up sheet was passed around the table.

 

 

2.         Introduce and welcome new members 

                       

            Steve Galitzer introduced and welcomed the new SWMC members.  They are as

            follows:

                       

                        Van Withee (City of Manhattan Representative)

                        William “Bill” Clark (City of Manhattan Representative)

                                   

 

3.         Minutes of  Previous Meeting.

 

            A motion was made and seconded to approve the minutes of  May 28, 1996 as

            distributed.  Motion carried unanimously.

4.         Subcommittee Reports

 

            WASTE REDUCTION:   Bill Clark

 

            Presented and discussed charts indicating typical waste compositions.

 

            HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE:   Steve Galitzer

 

            - Regional Household Hazardous Waste will be collected at the new Noxious                              Weed location north of  Manhattan                                         

            - HHW will continue to be collected once a month by Noxious Weed using mobile                       trailer at Howie’s

            - K-State is exploring possible drop-off location for HHW

 

            EDUCATION:

           

 

            A discussion took place particularly concerning the Fair.  The Household           Hazardous Waste trailer will be at the Riley County Fair.  Volunteers are needed. Extension staff will take care of getting people signed up.  

 

            Karen McCulloh has requested an information table for the Farmer’s Market.  She        received a positive response on the idea, so has offered to work on developing this   idea.  Committee has agreed.

 

            COMPOSTING:  Judy Willingham

 

            Chapter is completed.  Judy suggested that maybe the committee should consider          approaching the Board of County Commissioners regarding adopting a formal       resolution banning Yard Waste from the Transfer Station.  Debate ensued regarding the current system and how it is working.  No action was taken.

 

 

5)         Worksession on Solid Waste Management Plan

 

            The group then divided into the various subcommittees to work on their individual

            chapters.

 

 

6)         Set date and time for next meeting/Adjourn

                       

            At 9:00 the group reconvened for adjournment. There was a consensus of  the   committee not to have a July meeting.  The next meeting will be August 27, 1996       at 7:00 pm, 2nd Floor Conference Room, Riley County Office Building.
