Several counties in the state have been notified by citizens that letters have been received advising property owners to obtain a certified copy of their deeds. A company by the name of National Deed Services, Inc. is sending letters to property owners that state the U.S. Government Federal Citizen Information Center recommends property owners have an “official or certified copy” of their deed. The letter then goes on to say they will provide a copy of the deed for $69.50. The letter looks very official, providing document numbers for the deeds, and making statements such as “Due to the large number of transactions, this will be your only notice of service.” Upon checking the Federal Citizen Information Center, we found a notice stating the following: “The Federal Citizen Information Center has learned that a company is using the information in our Managing Household Records Consumer Focus article as a reason for purchasing a certified deed from them. You do not have to use a private company to obtain a certified copy of the deed to your home, and in many states you can obtain one from you local Register of Deeds free or at a low cost. …..” Any Riley County citizen that would like a copy of the deed for their property can obtain one by contacting the Register of Deeds Office. The cost for a copy is $1.00 per page plus a $1.00 fee for certification of the document. So far, we do not have any indication that this solicitation has reached Riley County. If any Riley County citizen does receive this letter, the Register of Deeds Office requests that you notify them by email or by phone at (785) 537-6340.
