                                  SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE

7:00 P.M.                                                                               


Members Present:   David Bollman, William Clark, William Eberle, Steve Galitzer, David Horn, Joe Kitterman, Edmund Kriebs, Alan Ladd, Bob Newsome, Dennis Peterson, Diane Stoddard, Karen Visser, Jean Waters, Monty Wedel, Judy Willingham, John Woods and Fran Zerby.


Others Present: 


Members Absent:  Burke Bayer, Betty Book, Dianne Brummet, Phyllis Epps, Jerry Ericson, Dan Harden, Ernest Jordan, Roger Kvasnicka, Reddi Lakshmi, Damian Schmidt, Howard Wilson and Van Withee.




1.                  Roll Call - The meeting was called to order at 7:00 by Chairman Steve Galitzer.  An attendance sheet was distributed.


2.                  Approve the minutes of the previous meeting – The minutes of the previous meeting were approved as distributed.


3.                  Tour of Riley County HHW Facility and update on HHW program – (NOTE: This item was moved to the end of the agenda)  Dennis Peterson presented the history of the HHW program in Riley County and relayed statistics since the programs inception.  He updated the group on the development of the regional program and the various special projects that have occurred over the years.  The Committee then toured the new regional HHW Facility.


4.                  Update on KDHE solid waste implementation grant and KSU recycling program -   Gary John Woods reported on the $14,000 grant the County had received to purchase recycling trailers that will serve the KSU recycling program.  They plan to pick up cans, plastic and newspapers from recycling clusters located around the campus.  They are also working on ways to improve their cardboard and office paper recycling programs and are considering a grant application in the next round to help with that.


5.                  Update on Earth Day activities -  Judy Willingham explained that a community committee had been formed and was being chaired by Nancy Denning. The committee is suggesting doing a variety of activities such as:


·        Having a joint proclamation signed to include Fort Riley, Ogden, Manhattan, Riley County, Geary County/J.C., and possibly Riley and Leonardville;

·        Developing some postable flyers;

·        Recycling rewards day at Howies;

·        Competition for office paper recycling through Clear Your Files Day;

·        Booth at the Zoo;

·        Display from KSU Engineering.


Judy reminded everyone that we need volunteers to work at Howies on the 24th.  Karen Visser suggested the activities be expanded to include the north part of the County.  They will work on accomplishing this.


6.         Set date and time for next meeting/adjournThe next meeting was scheduled for the 18th of March at 7:00 at the Riley County Office Building.
