One of the friendliest people at Riley County has been selected as the employee of the month for May, 2022. Victoria Slack was hired last July when we recognized that the new online appointment system left a gap in customer service. People arrived at the office but didn’t have a place to check in. Vicki stepped into that role, helping direct visitors, and pointing folks in the right direction. Her winning personality brought an unexpected element of joy to visiting county offices.
For many of us, her friendly hello in the morning sets the tone for the day.
Vicki was nominated for Employee of the Month because she does an amazing job of greeting the public, answering their questions, and maintaining a friendly and professional demeanor in a variety of difficult circumstances. She sometime receives phone calls from people who are agitated, and instead of saying “that’s not my job,” she always works to find the information or solution needed.
Vicki has lived in Kansas almost all her life. She worked at McCall’s Patterns for 14 years and she believes in being happy and positive. She says “Getting angry is a waste of energy.”
Vicki chose this job because Donna and Shilo, her supervisors who conducted the job interview, had a nice, positive energy, and showed commitment to providing a low stress atmosphere for employees.
“I’m amazed at how organized, kind, and helpful we are for a government entity,” said Slack. “Everyone is down-to-earth, and we really do care about people.”
Caring for dogs is another of Vicki’s passions. She has four fur-kids at home and spent 10 years volunteering for the Wamego Animal Shelter until they closed in 2019.
Vicki has been here only a short time but has already made a big impact on the organization. If you stop by the County Offices, make sure to tell her hello!
