Baby Formula Shortage

baby formula dos and donts

Are you having trouble finding baby formula? A nation-wide shortage is making formula more difficult to purchase. First, please look for different types of formula. Powder is most common, but there may be Ready to Feed and Concentrate options available at local stores. Be sure to read the instructions on the container for appropriate preparation and storage. If you can’t find what you need, talk to your pediatrician or family provider about alternatives.

REMEMBER: Don’t dilute formula and don’t make your own. Diluting formula can cause nutritional imbalances.

Each brand of formula has the same “standard” options – advance, gentle, spit up, sensitive, and soy. However, some babies may need more specialty formulas and those can be a little more tricky to substitute.

Stores are doing their best with ordering, but they may not always get what they order. Ask friends and family to look around, check store websites for stock, check smaller stores and drug stores, and even contact local food pantries to see if they have any donated formula on hand.

This can be a scary situation, but you don’t have to go through it alone. WIC clients who have difficulties finding formula may contact the office at (785) 776-4779 ext. 7661.
