The new, bivalent doses of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are now available at the Riley County Health Department Clinic. The new booster doses are designed to promote immune responses to the original COVID-19 strains as well as the recent BA.4 and BA.5 lineages of the Omicron variant. Vaccine boosters help to restore protection that has waned since previous vaccination, and in this case, they provide broader protection.
If it’s been at least two months since your last vaccine dose (finished the primary series or received a booster dose) it is recommended that you get the new, bivalent booster. The Moderna bivalent booster is available to those 18 and older. The Pfizer bivalent booster is available to those 12 and older. These bivalent boosters have not yet been approved for younger people, but the CDC expects that to happen in the coming weeks.
Please note, you do not need to get the same booster as your original doses. Both Pfizer and Moderna offer the same level of protection.
Walk-ins are welcome at the Health Department Clinic, located at 2030 Tecumseh Road. You can also schedule a vaccine appointment by calling (785) 776-4779 ext. 7675.
