We are proud to announce the Riley County Board of County Commissioners proclaimed November 2022 Native American Heritage Month. Riley County EMS staff members Nathan Dixon and Abby Linderman received the proclamation, which stated:
WHEREAS, Native Americans were the first to create cities, domesticate crops, and establish great civilizations in the Americas, and
WHEREAS, the state of Kansas is historically home to many Native nations, including the Kaw, Osage, and Pawnee, and many other Nations utilized the lands currently within Riley County as their hunting grounds, and
WHEREAS, Kansas is the current home to four federally recognized Native nations: The Prairie Band Potawatomi, the Kickapoo Tribe of Kansas, the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska, and the Sac and Fox Nation of Missouri in Kansas and Nebraska, and
WHEREAS, Native Americans have profoundly shaped our country's character and our cultural heritage, and enriched every aspect of our country, and
WHEREAS, Native Americans, Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiians are leaders in every aspect of our society – as teachers, professionals, emergency responders, business owners, elected officials, and neighbors, and
WHEREAS, Riley County celebrates the traditions, languages, and stories of Native Americans to help ensure their rich histories and contributions can thrive with each passing generation,
NOW THEREFORE, We, County Commissioners of Riley County, Kansas, do hereby proclaim November 2022
NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH
in Riley County, Kansas in recognition of the immeasurable contributions that Native Americans have made to our Nation.
