[ARCHIVED] Don't throw old medications in the trash

photos of multicolored pills, with text "dispose of medications safely"

Here’s a quick and easy way to help the environment in the New Year – dispose of medications properly to keep them out of our water. Did you know that water treatment does not remove medications if you flush them? Putting them in the trash can also lead to water table contamination. The best thing to do is drop off old, expired, or unwanted prescription and over-the-counter medications at Riley County Household Hazardous Waste, free of charge.

Please remove labels from prescription bottles, or simply empty the medications into a plastic baggie. We can’t accept sharps or needles, chemotherapy medications, or inhalers. Please contact your pharmacy for information about how to dispose of those items safely.

We know you want to do the right thing, so we made it easy. Visit our permanent location, just north of Manhattan at 6245 Tuttle Creek Boulevard Monday-Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. OR stop by our mobile trailer at 625 S. 10th St. in Manhattan (near Howie’s Recycling) the second Saturday of every month from 8:00 a.m. to noon.

Questions? Please call us at 785-539-3202.
