The dam failure warning system was a temporary system to warn the downstream public of potential dam failure until seismic stabilization of the dam was complete. The stabilization process for the dam was completed on August 31, 2009 and the dam failure warning system was disconnected from the dam on December 2, 2009.
Although the Corps will no longer utilize the system for dam failure warning, the warning siren system will continue to serve a purpose for the citizens of Manhattan and parts of rural Riley and Pottawatomie Counties. The warning siren operation of the system, including monthly tests, will now be conducted by Riley County Emergency Management for tornado and civil defense warnings.
