The Riley County Appraiser’s Office has completed mailing of the 2012 Change of Value Notices (CVNs) for each of the approximately 24,000 real estate parcels in the county. The CVNs, which were mailed February 17th, reflect changes in property values due to our local real estate market. The CVNs provide both the current and previous year’s value, a brief explanation of the valuation process, and explanations of the appeal process. The CVNs also include a form that can be sent to the Appraiser’s Office for purposes of scheduling an informal appeal.
A contact phone number, 785-537-6316, has been established for those who wish to schedule the appeal by phone. Property owners may also visit the Appraiser’s Office during office hours, 8:00 am-5:00 pm Monday-Friday, with questions or to schedule an appeal. In addition, property data can be accessed through the County’s website at: www.rileycountyks.gov/parcel . Sales data can be accessed through the website during the appeals sign-up period only, February 17-March 19th. To access individual properties’ sales information on-line, individuals may go to: E-Gov Services>On-line Appraisal Data, and log-in. The temporary 30 day User Name (informal) and Password (appeal) can be used through March 19th. Property owners will have until Monday, March 19th to schedule appeals.
We’d like to remind people that valuations are simply the “fair & equitable” portion of the property tax formula. We’re mandated to place values within 10% of fair market value, based on sales of properties within the county. Valuation changes do not necessarily mean changes in property taxes. There are no increases or decreases in property taxes until or unless local units of government set their spending levels, through their budgeting processes.
