[ARCHIVED] New Commercial Registration System Begins Jan 1, 2014

Beginning Jan. 1, the Riley County Treasurer’s office will begin registering Commercial trucks and trailers in a new registration system called Kcovrs. All trucks in this new system will pay a commercial vehicle fee in lieu of property taxes. This system does not affect farm vehicles.

A commercial vehicle is any vehicle that is driven or towed in the furtherance of commerce and is used to transport property or passengers when the vehicle:

  • Has a gross vehicle weight or gross combination vehicle weight of 10,001 pounds or more
  • Is designed or used to transport 15 or more passengers, including the driver
  • Is used to transport hazardous material in a quantity that requires having a placard in the vehicle
  • If a vehicle meets any one of the three criteria, it is considered a commercial vehicle.

Not all counties in the state are registering commercial vehicles. More information about which counties are participating and information about commercial vehicle registration are available in the commercial vehicle registration section of www.truckingks.org/cmvresources.html.

To assist in the registration process we have developed a Customer Information Checklist and a Vehicle Information Checklist. We need to have one Customer Information Checklist completed per customer. A separate Vehicle Information Checklist will need to be completed for each vehicle.

Feel free to call the treasurer’s office at 785-537-6320 if you have any additional questions.
