On June 21, 2018, American Public Transportation Association (APTA) and public transportation systems across the country (like your local ATA Bus!) will celebrate the 13th Annual National Dump the Pump Day!
Sponsored by the APTA, the 2018 National Dump the Pump Day is a day that encourages people to ride public transportation and to take them where they need to go, instead of driving a car. Started in June 2006 when gas prices were $3 per gallon, this national day emphasizes that public transportation is a convenient travel option that also helps people save money. According to the April APTA Transit Saving Report, individuals in a two-person household can save an average of more than $10,063 annually by downsizing to one car.
However, public transportation doesn't just help people save money, it also helps communities grow and prosper. For example, for every $1 invested in public transportation, $4 is returned in economic returns. Mayors know that communities with public transportation are more competitive. So, riding public transportation helps people AND their communities!
