Is my system grandfathered in and does it have to meet Sanitary Code requirements?: Under Article 5, Section 2-5.4, any premise which does not contain a lawful private wastewater disposal system is subject to all restrictions and requirements of the Sanitary Code.

1. Does Riley County have a Sanitary Code?: Yes, the present code was adopted Feb. 20, 2020 by Resolution 02202020-07.

2. Do I need a Septic Permit to build in Riley County?: Yes, if water is run into a structure a septic permit is required under article 4, section 1-4.1 of the Sanitary Code.

3. Is my system grandfathered in and does it have to meet Sanitary Code requirements?: Under Article 5, Section 2-5.4, any premise which does not contain a lawful private wastewater disposal system is subject to all restrictions and requirements of the Sanitary Code.

I want to sell my property, how do I obtain a septic and water evaluation for the site?: You can obtain the form on the Riley County Website under Planning and Development, Environmental Health, Applications, Environmental Evaluation Application or at the Riley County Planning and Development, Environmental Health, Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm.

5. Do I need a well permit to drill a water well on my property?: Yes, under Chapter III, Article 3, you need to make application for a permit and then it must be approved before you can use the water. You can obtain the form on the Riley County Website under Planning and Development, Environmental Health, Applications, Private Water Well Supply application or at the Riley County Planning and Development, Environmental Health, Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm.

6. Can I get my well water tested locally?: Yes, the Environmental Health section of Planning and Development has a staffed on-site laboratory for testing bacterial and some chemical contaminates in well water.
